Gray is an unincorporated suburb of Johnson City located in Washington County, Tennessee, United States. The United States Census Bureau treats it as a census-designated place . The population was 1,273 at the 2000 census. Gray lies just outside the junction between Interstate 81 and Interstate 26, the latter of which runs directly through the town. Originally, the town was known as Gray Station, as it mainly served as a rail depot, but over time, the shortened name became the preferred usage. The Gray area consisted primarily of rural farmland until the late 20th century, when it began to grow and take shape as a mostly residential suburb, with some minor commercial activity.
