Originally, the town was known as Gray Station, as it mainly served as a rail depot, but over time, the shortened name became the preferred usage. The Gray area consisted primarily of rural farmland until the late 20th century, when it began to grow and take shape as a mostly residential suburb, with some minor commercial activity.
