Greenville, Pennsylvania

: Greenville is a borough in Mercer County, Pennsylvania on the Shenango River, 72 miles north by west of Pittsburgh. It is the seat of Thiel College , opened in 1870. In the past, the manufacturing interests included railroad shops, bridge works, gristmills, a cement-block plant, an automobile factory, foundries and machine shops, saw and planing mills, steelworks, a railroad-car manufacturer, and flour mills. Good water power was supplied by the Shenango River. In 1900, 4,814 people lived in Greenville; the number rose to 5,909 in 1910; and stood at 10,000 in 1940. The population was 6,380 at the 2000 census.
