It is a city on the edge of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The City also has its own Metropolitan Area . The population of the Metropolitan Area in 2000 was 222,771 and the 2006 estimate is 257,619 . Hagerstown is the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the State of Maryland. Hagerstown is Western Maryland's Largest City. Hagerstown is Maryland's fifth largest city, if the total urban area would be one city, it would be Maryland's second-most populous city. It is known as the "Hub City," due to the large number of roads and other transit that cross the city.
