The name is derived from Jacob VanHeuvel, a developer who improved the local economy. The Village of Heuvelton is situated about six miles southeast of the city of Ogdensburg on the Oswegotchie River and is in the south part of the Town of Oswegatchie. Heuvelton is the only village in the Town of Oswegatchie, and the only other considerable settlement is the City of Ogdensburg.
