Immokalee, Florida

Immokalee is a census-designated place in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 19,763 at the 2000 census. The name was submitted by settlers to the Postmaster General in 1895, suggested by the woman who would become the first Immokalee postmistress in 1898, Mary Burrell. It comes from the Seminole language and means our home. The Immokalee Seminole Reservation and casino is located there. The Audubon Society's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is nearby. Immokalee is the birthplace of Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl running back Edgerrin James. The Immokalee High School football team won the 2004 Class 2A State Championship.
