Jefferson is a city in Marion County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,024 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marion County , and is situated in East Texas. The city is a tourism center, with popular attractions including: Jay Gould's railroad car, the Sterne Fountain, Excelsior House, the House of the Four Seasons, and the bayous formed by Big Cypress, Little Cypress, and Black Cypress located in and around the city The Old Post Office building served as an office and federal court, until federal government discontinued its use in 1965. It now houses the Jefferson Historical Museum. Construction on the building began in 1888. The town newspaper is the Jefferson Jimplecute, which was founded in 1848 and is the fifth oldest newspaper in Texas.
