It is home to the main campus of Utah State University, founded in 1888, and is often known as a college town. It is also a major producer of cheese and other dairy products. Logan is the principal city of the Logan, UT-ID Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Cache County in Utah and Franklin County in Idaho. In 2005, Morgan Quitno declared the Logan metropolitan area the safest in the United States.
