City officials cited in a May 2006 Arizona Republic article said the city's population was "closer to 21,000" and could hit 100,000 by 2011. The Census Bureau's estimate as of July 1, 2006 was 30,518 inhabitants. By comparison, in the 2000 census, the CDP population was 1,040. The city was officially incorporated on October 15, 2003, becoming the 88th incorporated city in Arizona. The city's first special census was completed Saturday, March 13, 2004 and showed a population of 4,998.
