Marshall, North Carolina

Marshall is a town in Madison County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 840 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Madison County . Downtown Marshall. In the 1970s, completed construction of a highway bypass caused many of the downtown businesses to close and several original buildings were left empty. In 2001 a collection of visual artists and musicians from Atlanta, GA relocated to downtown Marshall as part of a rural urban development experiment. Several of the historic downtown buildings were purchased and converted to gallerys, artist studios, a recording studio, luxury apartments and a coffee shop. The year 2004 saw an infusion of additional people from as far away as Chicago, Massachusetts and Florida. The Madison County Arts Council was formed, which holds an annual arts fair and has an office and performance space in a converted church on Main Street in downtown Marshall.
