Monongahela is a city in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States and is part of the Pittsburgh Metro Area. The population was 4,761 at the 2000 census. In 1940, the population of Monongahela was 9,823, in 1950, 10,387, in 1960, 12,948, in 1970, 11,726, in 1980, 8,590, and in 1990, it was 5,892. Known locally as "Mon City," Monongahela is perhaps most famous as the hometown of football great Joe Montana.
