This is a by-product of the Amalgamated Sugar Company sugar beet processing plant. When the beets are cooked, they emit an odor. In 2006, though, the plant drastically cut emissions to reduce the odor, making it only noticeable on occasion in the northern part of Nampa. Amalgamated Sugar is marketed under the name "White Satin Sugar."
