North Myrtle Beach is a city in Horry County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 10,974 at the 2000 census. North Myrtle Beach is home to Vanna White, who graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School and the birth place of South Carolina's state dance, the shag. The city is broken into four sections from north to south: Cherry Grove, Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach, and Windy Hill. In 1968, these formerly separate municipalities were combined into the single town of North Myrtle Beach, with Atlantic Beach choosing to remain independent. North Myrtle Beach is a distinct municipality from Myrtle Beach and Atlantic Beach, which lies in the middle of the city. The northern section of Myrtle Beach is often referred to as "north Myrtle Beach," causing confusion among visitors not familiar with the area and distinctions.
