Orofino, Idaho

Orofino is a town in Clearwater County, Idaho, along the Clearwater River. The population was 3,247 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Clearwater County . Near present-day Orofino at Canoe Camp, the Lewis and Clark expedition built five new dugout canoes and embarked on October 7 1805. Just north is the town is Dworshak Reservoir, Dworshak National Fish Hatchery, and the Dworshak Dam, third highest dam in the United States. Originally the name was two words, Oro Fino, for a creek nearby, that was named for the fine gold dust found in the creek.
