Ringgold is named for Major Samuel Ringgold, the hero of the battle of Palo Alto near Brownsville, Texas, in the Mexican-American War. Ringgold, the son of a U.S. representativefrom Maryland, was known for his particularly effective use of artillery. Ringgold was also the first American casualty of the Mexican War. Ringgold was the birthplace of World War II prisoner of war Duvall Cortez Wimberly, Sr. , a veteran educator in Bienville and neighboring Webster Parish. A resident of Springhill, Wimberly was a former officer of American Ex-Prisoners of War, an organization chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1942, and based in Arlington, Texas. He was president of the organization in 1974.
