The Rolla Micropolitan Statistical Area consists of Phelps County. Rolla is the home of the University of Missouri–Rolla . It was formerly known as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. The US Geological Survey maintains a large facility that hosts the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center III, the Missouri Water Science Center, the Mid-Continent Geographic Science Center, the National Spatial Data Infrastructure Partnership Office Liaisons, and the Rolla Science Information & Library Services office.
