As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 3,201. Saddle River has the second-highest per-capita income in the state. Nationwide, Saddle River ranks 27th among the 100 highest-income places in the United States . Saddle River was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on November 22, 1894, from portions of Orvil Township, based on the results of a referendum held three days earlier, at the height of the Boroughitis phenomenon sweeping through Bergen County at the time. The borough is named after the Saddle River, which flows through the borough and is a tributary of the Passaic River. West Saddle River Road and East Saddle River Road runs through this borough.
