Salem is a City in Salem County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the city population was 5,857. It is the county seat of Salem County . The name Salem is related to the Hebrew word shalom, meaning peace. Salem's formal existence dates back to a township of the same name established in October 1693 for the purpose of electing officers. The area had been laid out in 1675 by John Fenwick. The township was formally incorporated on February 21, 1798. On February 25, 1858, it was reincorporated as Salem City.
