Tate is an unincorporated town located in Pickens County, Georgia, United States. Originally called Marble Works post office by the United States Postal Service, then Harnageville after Ambrose Harnage, it was the first county seat for Cherokee County, Georgia, which was at that time a large territory for the Cherokee people. There was almost no government at the time, though in 1832 it held the first election for the county, and court was held at the Harnage house. It was renamed after Colonel Sam Tate in 1880. Tate includes the main quarries of the Georgia Marble Company, a newly division of the second largest stone company in North America, Polycor. The quarries are internationally known for their marble quality, and are served by the Georgia Northeastern Railroad.
