It is the central location of The Villages, Florida, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Sumter County. The original portions of the complex and the town square are in Lake County, however the newly constructed community of Sumter Landing was built in 2005 as a second more commercially oriented town square and is wholly within Sumter County.
