Wantagh is a hamlet that consists of two census-designated places in Nassau County, New York, United States. The portion of Wantagh that is north of Jerusalem Avenue is considered North Wantagh, and the portion south of Jerusalem Avenue is considered just Wantagh or sometimes even "South" Wantagh. Wantagh is in the southeastern part of the Town of Hempstead it serves as a suburb of New York City on Long Island. The city is easily accessible through roads and commuter rail. The population of Wantagh was 18,971, with a combined North and South population of 31,127 at the time of the 2000 census . Jones Beach State Park is located in Wantagh, making it known as "The Gateway to Jones Beach" .
