Waukon is an incorporated municipality constituting the county seat of Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,131 at the 2000 census. . Waukon is named for Chief Waukon Decorah, a Ho Chunk who cooperated with whites during the Black Hawk War and whose people were subsequently forced out of Wisconsin into Northeast Iowa. The team-name for Waukon High School is the Indians, and it has been suggested that a new name be chosen. In honor of Chief Waukon Decorah, Ho-Chunks has been suggested, which explains why Indians will likely continue.
