Deer Lodge, Montana

Deer Lodge is one of the oldest cities in Powell County, Montana, United States. The population was 3,421 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Powell County . It is perhaps most presently famous locally as being near the site of Montana State Prison, a major employer. It has been known by many prior names such as Labarge City and Willow Creek but the name Deer Lodge comes from the native name for the place near the geothermal hot springs which drew deer to the area in winter. The hot springs are located on the current Montana prison grounds so they are not accessible anymore. The old Montana State Prison is also a major feature of Deer Lodge and now is used as musuem and theater as well as hosting a wonderful antique and classic car museum inside. Nearby to the old Prison are a saloon museum and a doll and toy museum.
