Hauppauge, New York

Hauppauge is a hamlet in the Town of Islip and the Town of Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Its name means "land of High Water" in the true Native American definition of the word Hauppauge. The term "Land Of Sweet Water" was found to be false, and "Land Of High Water" was found to be true because there was a lack of knowledge of the Native American languages at the time of the town's naming. Since there was an ignorance of those languages, the name stuck. The Native Americans defined the town as the "Land Of High Water" due to the fact that Hauppauge used to have many lakes and swamps. Today, Hauppauge still has a small number of lakes and swamps scattered about, but due to the high residential demand for property, a majority of these bodies of water have been filled in and built over for housing purposes.
