Hickory, North Carolina

Hickory is a city in Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. Hickory has the 162nd largest urban area in the United States. It is the economic, social, and cultural center of the Catawba River Valley. As of the 2000 census, the city had a Metropolitan Combined Statistical Area population of 341,851, making it the 4th largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. The 2000 U.S. Census gave Hickory a population of 37,222, but the city has enjoyed rapid growth since 2000, and its population is currently estimated at 56,267. The CSA, which includes Catawba, Caldwell, Burke, and Alexander Counties is often referred to as the "Unifour," although this name is largely unknown outside the region. Hickory is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1998 Money Magazine's "most livable place to live" and being named an All-America City three times .
