As of the 2000 census, the village population was 49,495 and estimated to be 52,046 in 2005. The village was incorporated in 1959 . The village now serves as the headquarters location for the Sears Holdings Corporation. Beginning in 2006, it will be home to the Chicago Hounds of the United Hockey League and the Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League. The following spring, it will also be home to the Chicago Shamrox of the National Lacrosse League and the Chicago Slaughter of the Continental Indoor Football League.
