Kosciusko, Mississippi

Kosciusko is a city in Attala County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,372 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Attala County . Kosciusko is located on the Natchez Trace Parkway, northeast of Jackson. It is named for the Belarusian soldier Tadeusz Kościuszko, who assisted United States military efforts during the American Revolution. However the name of the township omits the "z" as the name is commonly anglicized. Kosciusko was originally named Red Bud Springs for one of three natural springs that were present in the city. It is locally pronounced Kah-zee-ESS-ko. Kosciusko has been recognized on more than one occasion as one of the top 100 small cities in America in which to live, and as of 2005, all Kosciusko City Schools were rated at the highest level given by the State of Mississippi. Based on Demographics, Kosciusko's schools are often cited as the best in the state. Kosciusko is the home of Magnolia Bible College.
