Maricopa, Arizona

Maricopa is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. During a December 31, 2005 special census, the fast-growing city was reported to have a population of 15,934. The growth rate began to decline in 2006 and continued to fall in 2007 as the local housing market slumped. City officials cited in a May 2006 Arizona Republic article said the city's population was "closer to 21,000" and could hit 100,000 by 2011. The Census Bureau's estimate as of July 1, 2006 was 30,518 inhabitants. By comparison, in the 2000 census, the CDP population was 1,040. The city was officially incorporated on October 15, 2003, becoming the 88th incorporated city in Arizona. The city's first special census was completed Saturday, March 13, 2004 and showed a population of 4,998.
