Nanuet is a hamlet in Rockland County, New York, 19 miles north of Manhattan, and 2 miles north of the Jersey border. Nanuet is located between West Nyack, New York and Spring Valley, New York to the east and west, respectively, and Pearl River, New York and New City, New York to the south and north, respectively. According to the New York Times, the hamlet was first named named Nannawitt's Meadow after Nannawitt, a migratory Kakiat Indian who settled in the area now occupied by the Nanuet Mall at the intersection of Middletown Road and Route 59. Also according to the Times, the Erie Railroad arrived in Rockland County in 1841 - probably on the same route which today is traversed by the NJ Transit Pascack Valley line, running through Pearl River and Spring Valley - and after several name changes the hamlet became known as Nanuet in 1856.
