Streator, Illinois

Streator is a city in LaSalle County, Illinois in the midwestern United States. The population was 14,190 at the 2000 census. The Ottawa-Streator micropolitan area was the tenth-most populous in the United States in 2004. Streator is located at the southern boundary of LaSalle County, adjacent to Livingston County, Illinois. Streator is the birth town of astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto in 1930. Clarence E. Mulford grew up in Streator, and later wrote the famous Hopalong Cassidy series of books based on his youthful experiences. The Hopalong Cassidy River Trail winds along the banks of the Vermilion River, which passes Cassidy creator Clarence Mulford's boyhood home. Other Streator residents have included George "Honeyboy" Evans who composed "The Good Old Summertime", Ed Plumb who directed the music for several Disney movies, Bob Tattersall who was the King of Midget Car Racing, and Mary Lee Robb Cline who was the third actress to play the part of Marjorie, the niece...more
