Ameren Corporation is a holding company for power and energy providers. Ameren provides coverage to 64,000 square miles in Missouri and Illinois, serving 2.4 million residents with electric utilities and 900,000 customers with natural gas. This St-Louis based national company is one of the largest electric and gas utilities companies.
Ameren provides utilities services through generating and delivering electricity and distributing natural gas to customers. Ameren Missouri, Ameren Illinois, and Ameren Energy Resources comprise Ameren’s primary subsidiaries. Ameren Missouri offers rate-regulated power and services in Missouri through its energy centers; it also offers programs for renewable energy. Ameren Illinois serves 75% of the state with energy solutions and energy distribution. Moreover, Ameren Energy Resources handles non-rate-regulated services in retail marketing, merchant generation, and the procurement and transportation of coal, oil, and gas. Other Ameren business segments focus on transmission projects and shared services including administrative support. The company delivers utilities to both residential and business customers.
Union Electric Company and CIPSCO Inc. merged in 1995 to form Ameren Corporation—the merger was finalized in 1997, at which point Ameren began trading on the NYSE. Subsequent to the merger, Union Electric began operating under AmerenUE, now recognized as Ameren Missouri. Ameren later purchased the Central Illinois Light Company and then the Illinois Power company, expanding its reach considerably in the state of Illinois.
Today Ameren is traded under ticker AEE and employs 9,800 people. Within its companies, Ameren established Ameren Energy Resources as a holding organization for Ameren Energy Marketing and Ameren Energy Generating. The company recruits professionals, students, and veterans for jobs in customer service, engineerings, generation, lineman, and nuclear, among others.
