Blockbuster LLC is a global provider of movie and video game rentals. Though based in Englewood, Denver, Blockbuster operates Blockbuster rental stores and Blockbuster Express kiosks in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia. The company also provides streaming services via the Internet.
Blockbuster offers a library of more than 125,000 movies, TV shows, and video game titles. These titles may be rented in-store, by mail, online, or streamed digitally to TV sets, computers, and mobile devices. Customers are also able to purchase a selection of new and used DVDs, games, and accessories. In addition to media entertainment, most brick-and-mortar locations feature a movie snacks section stocked with popcorn, candy, and other refreshments.
Founder David Cook opened the first Blockbuster store in 1985. After more stores opened, the next step was to build a warehouse that could pull and package several stores per day. In 1987, Blockbuster won a court case against Nintendo to permit the rental of video games. During the 1990s, the company merged with Viacom and expanded into Europe with the acquisitions of Ritz Video and Xtra-vision. Expansion continued until Blockbuster hit a major bump in the road in the form of Netflix and Redbox. Sales dipped, revenue dropped, and Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy in 2010—only to be sold to DISH Network that same year. The company has since rebounded and shifted its focus to online services, while maintaining some 500 stores in the United States.
Blockbuster LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the DISH Network. Careers at Blockbuster are available in various retail and corporate positions. The company offers great benefits, training, and opportunities for advancement. Military veterans are encouraged to apply.
