Backpacks of Food Program- Eastway Elementary School
Often times kids that are on free or reduced lunches do not get anything to eat from Friday's lunch through Monday's breakfast at school, and it is a proven fact that hungry kids do not make the best students. Eastway Elementary School in Durham has over 83% of its student population on free and reduced meals. To help alleviate this problem, Communities in Schools of Durham has partnered with the NC Food Bank and Bayer Crop Science to provide backpacks filled with nutritious and filling food. Each Thursday afternoon, we fill 50 backpacks with 10+ pounds of food for the kids to take home for the weekend.
