Carousel Center VolunteerCape Fear Volunteer Center - Wilmington, NCThe Carousel Center is a non-profit organization committed to providing servies to victims of child abuse. Eighty-five percent of the children we see are 11 years old or younger; the most common age is only ifve years old. Of those children we examine, approximately 90% have been reffered for allegations of sexual abuse. Before the Carousel Center existed, children who were victims of abuse, were sent to the emergency room, where they endured a frightening medical exam to determine if sexual abuse had occurred, and to what extent. Area emergency rooms have neither the equipment, nor the certified staff for this kind of medical exam. It was with that understanding in mind that emergency room physicians, nurses, and the Junior League sought to establish the Carousel Center. Here, children...
