Imaging Research Scientist-1306387 Description The Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS) seeks a full-time Imaging Research Scientist to work in the area of radiopharmaceutical production for preclinical and human imaging research. Key Function 1: Design and synthesize small molecules for biochemical testing and use as PET probes for molecular imaging. Requires familiarity with organic synthesis techniques and with biochemical assays and handling cell lysate.

Specific Examples:
De novo synthesis of a potential PET probe for biochemical screening in cell lysate; Competition experiments against a tritiated ligand. Key Function 2: Design and implement positron emission tomography (PET) imaging studies with a focus upon molecular imaging of cancer. Demonstrate versatility and flexibility to coordinate and work with clinicians to forward goals of bench to bedside development of effective, cancer imaging PET tracers.

Key Function 3: Operation of cyclotron particle accelerator for production of requisite PET radionuclides, including but not limited to: fluorine-18; carbon-11; nitrogen-13; oxygen-15. Handle and transport of radioactive material (including tritium) according to strict radiation safety guidelines.

Specific Examples:
Generate necessary fluorine-18 from cyclotron for radiolabeling experiments; Transport synthesized PET probes to VUIIS for subsequent imaging studies. Key Function 4: Develops new research ideas, writes and submits IND applications and research proposals to appropriate agencies with minimal supervision.

Specific Examples:
Write NIH, private grants, and IND application with minimal guidance from direct supervisor; Write research proposals and contracts for potential corporate sponsors/collaborators with minimal guidance from direct supervisor. Key Function 5: Write scientific papers for submission to journals and conferences with little supervision. Prepare scientific presentations.

Specific Examples:
Submit conference papers at annual/semi-annual conferences, including Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), World Molecular Imaging Congress (WMIC); Submit papers in appropriate journals, such as Cancer Research, the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Organic Letters, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry; Present posters/oral presentations at conferences. Key Function 6: Train and supervise junior staff scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

Specific Examples:
Provide guidance to junior members of the laboratory with regard to organic synthesis and PET imaging. Basic Qualifications Job requires Doctorate (Organic Chemistry with an emphasis upon medicinal and synthetic chemistry and experience with radiochemical synthesis is preferred.) Applied industry experience a plus. Basic Qualifications Job requires Doctorate and 0 years of experience or the equivalent.
