• Consults with appropriate MD regarding any abnormal findings.
• Orders appropriate lab and medical imaging studies as needed.
• Institutes preventative measures and detects abnormal conditions. Obtains consultation and assistance from ancillary services as needed.
• Teaches, counsels, and guides individual members regarding their individual health care.
• Teaches antepartum classes as needed in individual facilities.
• Evaluates maternal general health status and well being.
• INTRAPARTUM: Performs medical screening exam to diagnose labor.
• Independently manages the care of low risk women during labor and delivery, under the supervision of a physician.
• Co-manages higher risk patients when determined appropriate by CNM and MD.
• Performs facility specific standardized procedures.
• Evaluates patient for appropriate pain management. Includes requesting epidural for women in labor.
• POSTPARTUM: Provides health supervision, care, teaches family planning, and prescribes contraception to women during the postpartum period.

Secondary Functions:

• Managing normal labor and delivery, including preventive measures and the detection of abnormal conditions; management of prenatal and postpartum outpatients in the clinic.

• Obtaining consultation and assistance from a physician when indicated Providing emergency care until the assistance of a physician can be obtained.

• Management of the normal newborn, including resuscitation and immediate care when indicated.

• Perform pudendal block; local infiltration anesthesia; episiotomy and repair.

• Assist with cesarean section.

• May be required to work in the hospital and OBGYN clinic settings depending on operational needs.

• Performs all appropriate physical examinations appropriate to CNM care needed, including the pap smear, breast examination, pelvic examination, and 1st and 3rd trimester ultrasounds.

• Teaches antepartum classes as needed in individual facilities.

• Must treat external and internal customers in a respectful, friendly, helpful, and professional manner at all times.

• Must adhere to the service expectation of the department and facility.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
• N/A.
Education
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
• Current and valid California R.N. license, California Nurse Midwife certificate, A.C.N.M. certification and BLS certification required.
• Current and valid DEA registration number specific to our practice at Kaiser to be obtained within one (1) year of hire at midwife's
expense.
• Must have a Nat'l Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain an NPI, prior to employment start date.

Additional Requirements:
• Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Three (3) years of experience as a C.N.M. with in the last three (3) years preferred.
• Current and valid California Nurse-Midwife furnishing certification (including any needed education in pharmacy) and didactic education and supervised clinical experience in third trimester limited obstetric ultrasound preferred OR to be obtained at midwife's expense within one (1) year of hire.

• Acceptance for authority to practice by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Committee On Interdisciplinary Practice (CIDP) and by the Executive Committee of The Medical Staff of Kaiser Foundation Hospital.

• Appropriate proctoring by the obstetrical physicians and midwives.

• Experience as a CNM preferred (full scope nurse-midwifery practice experience preferred).

• Experience in an inpatient OB unit preferred.

• Demonstrated service-oriented performance.

• Clinical training and experience in first and third trimester limited obstetric ultrasound preferred or to be obtained within 6 months.

• Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the Health Care Team.
