Job Description
Lockheed Martin is seeking an innovative and energetic Computational & Basic Sciences Research & Development Manager to support the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV. NETL, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Energys Office of Fossil Energy, is advancing cost-effective and environmentally sound technologies to meet the nations energy challenges by leveraging our most accessible resources. The Laboratory develops technologies and processes that answer pressing energy issues and provides our Nations policymakers with the scientific information they need to set sound energy policy. This position will be instrumental in growing NETL into one of our nations top energy research institutions.

The Computational and Basic Sciences (CBS) focus area of NETL's Office of Research and Development (ORD) develops and uses physics-based simulations to help overcome the technical barriers associated with the development of highly efficient, environmentally acceptable energy technologies and processes. These simulations range from the atomic/molecular-scale, to the device- and plant-scale, generating information beyond the reach of experiments alone by integrating experimental and computational sciences.

The successful candidate will be the primary site lead and interface for support of the DOE NETL Computational & Basic Sciences R&D; mission. This person will provide leadership for NETL research and discovery commercialization. Responsibilities include the following:

* Manage a multi-disciplined staff supporting research in Computational Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) / Multiphase Flow, High-performance Computing, Multi-scale Modeling, Development of Advanced Diagnostic Tools, and Process Simulation / Optimization

* Work closely with industry, academia, and Government organizations to advance R&D;

* Maintain & grow a strong relationships with researchers within utilities and private industry to assess gaps and identify limitations in todays technologies and determine current and future needs

* Manage state-of-the-art technical resources and capabilities with respect to equipment, facilities and research staff

* Ensure that Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H;) for all employees is a top priority across all locations

Note: This position is contingent upon contract award and funding which is anticipated summer 2014. Relocation is negotiable.

Basic Qualifications

* 8 or more years professional R&D; management experience supporting Computational & Basic Science research programs in an industrial advanced concept/research organization, university, or national laboratory environment

* Advanced degree in a computer science, applied computational mathematics, mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering or closely related engineering or math related discipline

* Documented expertise in Advanced Computational or Basic Science research via journal articles, patents, or invited presentations

* Deep understanding of one or more of the following application areas: high-performance computing infrastructure, computational fluid dynamics with multiphase flow computational modeling, modeling of power generation systems and processes, training simulations for operation and control of advanced energy systems, fluidized bed dynamics, and gasifier flow fields.

* Experience developing, optimizing, and running computational science models on multi-core High Performance Computing systems

Desired skills

* PhD in computer science, applied computational mathematics, mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering or closely related engineering or math related discipline

* Demonstrated business acumen, preferably via a degree in business administration or management

* Experience with Multiphase Flow with Interphase Exchange (MFIX) software and its underlying physics and numerical techniques to model gas-solids flow phenomena.

* Demonstrated experience and ability setting priorities in a large complex institution while managing competing interests

* Experience with commercialization and technology transfer of Computational and Basic Science research & development

* Proven ability to capture Government research & development funding
