It’s all in the details! Costume Fabrication (Seamstresses) create costumes and make complex alterations on costume pieces for all venues. Problem solving, superior organizational skills, and possessing the ability to use good judgment under pressure are just some of the key attributes we are looking for in a Costume Fabrication (Seamstress).


Costume Fabrication (Seamstresses) at Universal Orlando are responsible for:

  • Cutting costume pieces with knowledge of grain, knap and fabric saving techniques
  • Stitching and completing finishing work on costumes through hand stitching and use of industrial machinery.  Repairing and mending existing costumes at Fabrication, Service Area, or on location for marquee events.
  • Fitting and altering newly fabricated and purchased costumes and complex alterations to existing costumes.  Also responsible for the fitting and alterations for new shows and projects.
  • Ironing, washing, or dyeing fabric for costumes as needed for fabrication projects.
  • Performing craft or millinery work.  Including work with basic foams and adhesive.
  • Assisting in cleanliness and organization of the work areas.
  • Performing accurate logging of daily work product.
  • Understanding and actively participating in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.



To perform the role of a Costume Fabrication (Seamstress) successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Consistent attendance is a job requirement.
  • Knowledge and experience working on industrial sewing machine, walking foot machines, sergers, and pressing equipment required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, Associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school,
  • One to three years experience in advance garment construction, machine stitching, and alterations preferred
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is required to:

  • Regularly (2/3 of the time or more) sit; use hands too finger, handle or feel objects, handles, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally (1/3 of the time or less) stand; walk; and talk or hear; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; peripheral vision; and depth perception.


The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an individual encounters while performing the essential functions of the Costume Fabrication (Seamstress) job.


While performing the duties of this job, the individual is required to:

  • Regularly (2/3 of the time or more) be exposed to work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • While performing this job, the noise level in the work environment is loud.
