OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:

Under general supervision, ensures the health and safety of patrons of an aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  2. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.

  3. Responsible for performing necessary rescues and assisting any guest(s) in any manner required including administering first aide, providing information, and practicing public relations.
  4. Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  5. Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  6. Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
  7. Assists with organizing and scheduling swim lessons and other County aquatic programs and events.
  8. Work odd and irregular hours including weekends and holidays.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned including work in other functional areas to cover the absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise balance the workload.

*AT NO TIME SHOULD PERFORMANCE OF ADDITIONAL DUTIES INTERFERE WITH THE LIFEGUARD’S PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: SAFETY OF THE PATRONS!

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives instruction from Head Guard as to work duties. Instruction and/or changes may be over ruled through the chain of command from Parks Manager, Parks and Recreation Manager, or Director, respectively, as to work assignments.

SUPERVISION GIVEN:

None.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. May be assigned duties at various site locations; be subject to call out, or work a varying work week.
  2. Works in outdoors environment and may be exposed to varying climatic conditions.
  3. May be exposed to varying noise levels, dust, fumes, pollens, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and rodent control agents.
  4. May perform work on slippery or uneven surfaces, on ladders or scaffolding, around moving vehicles and equipment, and equipment with moving parts.
  5. Employees may be required to wear a uniform and will be required to wear appropriate safety apparel and equipment.
  6. Works indoors in adequate office space, lighting, ventilation and temperatures.
  7. Normal exposure to indoor dust/dirt.
  8. Works in conditions of potential outbursts or disruptive behavior of general public with potential for personal physical harm.
  9. May perform work alone or as part of a team.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:

  1. See well enough to read standard text at a distance. Vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  2. Hear well enough to communicate over music and equipment.
  3. Stamina to swim and work in various outdoor temperatures.
  4. Speak fluent English to enforce pool rules and converse on the pool P.A. system and to assist guest.

5. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.

  1. Employees are required to perform tasks requiring a relatively high degree of physical strength and endurance, stand and walk for long periods of time, reach above and below waist level, have bodily movement adequate to climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch and traverse rough uneven terrain, safely lift and carry objects.
  2. Must communicate clearly in person, by telephone and/or radio,
  3. Must have manual dexterity to safely use equipment and tools.
  4. Must be able to pay close attention to detail and to concentrate on work
  5. Effectively carry out the facility’s Emergency Action Plan.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 16 to apply. Current certification as Lifeguard by a recognized source of training OR ability to attend and pass the lifeguarding training course. CPR Certified or ability to attend and become cerfitied.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to work individually or as a team.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Responsible for attending all in-service and staff meetings in order to keep current on policies and maintain rescue skills.
  • Report to supervisor when materials or supplies are needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining personal fitness to be able to perform required functions.
  • Must have the willingness and ability to be assigned to another County facility as needed
  • Responsible for maintaining uniform in a neat, clean appearance.
