Position Summary: To oversee the health and well being of the animals at the sanctuary and to coordinate volunteers visiting Horse Haven while working in a team setting.

* Providing orientation meeting and materials to volunteers
* Coordinate volunteer locations and activities
* Insuring volunteers have completed appropriate forms and orientation, prior to volunteering in Horse Haven

Position Summary: To oversee the health and well being of the animals at the sanctuary and to coordinate volunteers visiting Horse Haven while working in a team setting.

Responsibilities:

* Providing orientation meeting and materials to volunteers
* Coordinate volunteer locations and activities
* Insuring volunteers have completed appropriate forms and orientation, prior to volunteering in Horse Haven
* Interact with volunteers, interns and visitors; answering questions and promoting Best Friends mission and assisting with their needs
* Interact with the Volunteer and Visitor Engagement division to assist with scheduling volunteers, groups and interns
* Provide back-up support to caregivers and other staff members as needed
* Assist in unloading hay and feed deliveries at the sanctuary
* Take initiative and identify improvements to tasks
* Be attentive to others needs and willingly assist as required
* Relate to employees, volunteers and visitors in a friendly, informative, and professional manner
* Maintain clean working environment
* Monitor overall health and behavior of animals, reporting changes/concerns to TL and veterinary staff
* Create a healthy and positive living environment for the animals
* Daily mucking and other caregiving duties as required
* Assist in transporting of animals as requested
* Display a willingness to learn and ask questions
* Participate in staff meetings and caregiver meetings
* Use all tools, equipment and vehicles appropriately and treat them as if they were your own
* Utilize appropriate safety equipment when indicated and always work in a safe and thoughtful manner
* Other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience:

* Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends Animal Society and Horse Haven positions on issues
* Previous experience working with equines with natural horsemanship techniques preferred
* The ability to remain pleasant, calm and objective in all situations
* Demonstrates approachability when dealing with the staff and general public.
* Experience in interacting with the general public (customer service) preferred.
* Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be personable, outgoing, patient, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people. The ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of others.
* Accurate, appropriate, clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong listening skills.
* Ability to make sound judgments and work independently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
* Professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues.
* Ability to foster a cooperative work environment with staff as well as volunteers.
* Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
* Resourceful. Must have the initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved.
* Demonstrates personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner.
* Operate vehicles and pull a trailer. Experience driving an ATV and tractors preferred.
* Must have a valid driver’s license and qualify for BFAS insurance.

Physical Requirements:

* Must be able to perform strenuous and repetitive physical activity on a daily basis including but not limited to: shoveling, mucking, lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, bending, walking, climbing up and down ladders, and climbing into and out of vehicles
* Must be able to routinely lift 80 – 100 pounds
* Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to about 100 degrees
* Must be able to work around allergens like hay, dust, and equines
