Summary:
The incumbent is empowered and accountable to ensure that all finished products conform to specified requirements, and that finished products which do not conform to requirements are prevented from being used or delivered.

The Packaging Engineer must have the knowledge base and capability of performing analytical testing assuring functional packaging. Requires the understanding of plastics, paper board products, adhesives, production needs, (both mechanical and people), printing inks, efficiency methods, shipping requirements (to include Hazardous materials, DOT, UN and TSCA labeling requirements), closures, Quality Assurance practices, GMP procedures, ASTM standards, test procedures, and some Industrial Engineering principles.

Packaging (primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging):
- Develop new product packaging.

- Develop new and innovative concepts.

- Improve upon current product packaging designs.

- Select and define appropriate package materials.

- Vendor contact regarding all packaging needs.

- Provide direction regarding the company's packaging needs (ie, Tamper evident, recyclable materials, etc.

- Develop and implement label printing systems used to print bar code labels and other labels for product packaging.

- Testing per approved standards and product requirements (ie, ship tests, bottle/closure, packaging seals, labels/adhesives).

- Write and perform validation protocols for all types of packaging.

Associated Packaging Equipment:
- Select equipment for all levels of packaging.

- Implement / coordinate packaging equipment installations.

- Solve packaging machine problems with appropriate limits.

- Implement automation acceptable for future growth.

- Recommend mechanical / process improvements.

- Provide up-to-date technology.

- Vendor / outside contact for all mechanical needs.

Employee / Departmental Interaction
- Coordinate packaging changes with Engineering, Purchasing, Inventory Control, Marketing, Production, Shipping, Receiving, Quality Assurance, and Technical Services.

- Coordinate mechanical needs with Machine Repair, Facilities, Engineering, Production; in some instances, Receiving and Shipping.

- Develop packaging both new and old with Marketing, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, and Research & Development.

- Prepare and present program / project data.

- Project professional packaging image.

Managing:
- Manage projects initiated at facility, as well as, other divisions for which facility produces and packages their products.

- Prepare and coordinate the approval process for packaging materials specifications.

- Prepare project reporting.

- Monthly progress and future planning reports.

- Communicate in written form final project reporting.

- Prepare packaging program financial data including Purchase Requisition and Capital Appropriation Requests (CAR).

- Write and prepare input for SOP's.

- Inform management / interested parties of program status.

- Develop project reporting procedures.

- Provide data for annual budget.

- Control procedures and forms to maintain package integrity.

- Provide employees with technical guidance.

- Lead problem solving teams associated with packaging complaints / improvements.

Education and Experience:
BS degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is required. Minimum of five (5) years experience in all phases of packaging related field (pharmaceutical, cosmetic, medical) is preferred. An equivalent combination of education & experience will be considered. Prefer experience with regulatory agencies (ie, FDA, cGMP, and ISO 9000).
