General Function

Under the general direction of the Summer Camp Director, the Performing Arts Specialist oversees Camp's theatre, dance, guitar and yoga programs. Train and supervise 5-10 staff, develop curriculum, order and maintain equipment and supplies. Contribute to program team in the development of themes, sits, and evening programs. Previous performing arts / musical experience is required.

  1. Ensure the safety and health of all campers in accordance with applicable NYS requirements and CDYMCA requirements through proper supervision.
  2. Train counselors in proper lesson plans, curriculum, safety policies, and care of program supplies for dance, improv, theatre, guitar and yoga classes.
  3. Check all program supplies for assigned program areas on a daily basis to ensure appropriate state of repair and inventory.
  4. Assist the Skill Class Coordinator to ensure all campers are accounted for during skill classes.

  6. Communicate positively and enthusiastically with campers, parents, staff and volunteers.
  7. Treat each child with dignity and respect.
  8. Provide direction and role model positive behavior to all staff and Counselors in Training.
  9. Provide input and feedback to assist in end of summer staff evaluations.
  10. Report all accidents and incidents involving self, participants, guests or other employees.
  11. Familiar with and able to implement emergency procedures.
  12. Ensure cleanliness of facility or property as a member of Clean Team.
  13. All other duties as assigned.


Effect on End Result

The satisfactory performance of the incumbent will result in a consistently high quality summer camp program which ensures the health and safety of all campers.



Requirements:

Availability

Applicants must be available from June 15th through August 22th, with some additional preseason training and post season dates possible.


Job Requirements (Include education, experience and specific competencies)

  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Previous experience in camping, recreation, teaching, childcare or physical education preferred.
  • Must have previous experience in dance, theatre and music.
  • Ability to play guitar and piano preferred.
  • Excellent human relation skills, good organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, families and communities. The ability to articulate and model YMCA's four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibilities are essential.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity. The work is performed primarily outdoors.
