The Phlebotomist, Certified is responsible for the expert completion of a wide range of phlebotomy and laboratory pre-analytical duties.  The scope of services include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric bedside and/or outpatient phlebotomy procedures. In addition, responsibilities may include neonatal heel sticks, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric finger stick and veni-punctures, glucose tolerance collections and the handling and processing of all other laboratory specimens. Site dependent, this position's responsibilities may also include the processing of Chain of Custody Urine Collections, sweat chloride procedure collections, therapeutic phlebotomies, throat and NP specimen collections.

Participation and possibly coordination of Health Fairs is an expectation.

The Phlebotomist, Certified may be responsible for the collection of blood specimens as indicated on the physician order and/or requisition from nursing home patients, physician office patients, and/or assisted living patients. He/she must maintain a good working relationship with laboratory customers. Responsibilities include the correct labeling of tubes and specimens upon collection and the matching of specimens with orders if picking up specimens from other sites to assure that all samples are labeled correctly.  Responsible for assuring requisitions are complete with required documentation to satisfy HCFA guidelines and medical necessity information.  He/she maintains a good working relationship with laboratory customers.

The Phlebotomist, Certified assists phlebotomy and patient care staff as needed with difficult collections.  Requires independent judgment and a high degree of accountability as errors can be life threatening.

If requested, the phlebotomist serves as phlebotomy representative in a variety of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement work groups and committees. This positions' responsibility includes the training of patient care partner students, patient care staff as well as new employees and certification and recertification of bedside glucose instrument users. This position serves as a resource person for all patient care staff and guides by example.

It is vital that an individual in this position be capable of good communication skills. It is of the utmost importance that written communication is legible.

MSHA expects all team members to support the VOS initiative by demonstrating awareness of the VOS system and effectively applying it to his/her work.
Job duties of this position may require access to protected patient information (PHI). The team member will be accountable for appropriate use of the record and compliance with all confidentiality and security policy and procedures related to use, access, and disclosure of PHI.
This position reports to the Manager, Phlebotomy Coordinator or designee.

The minimum acceptable education requirement for this position is high school diploma/GED, and certification with a nationally accredited phlebotomy program such as (ASCP), (ASPT), (NACCLS), or (NPT). An Emergency Medical Services accreditation is considered comparable to a national phlebotomy program's certification.

Ten years phlebotomy experience is considered  equivalent to certification through a nationally recognized phlebotomy program.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, initiative, teaching skills and sound judgment are essential.

Must possess current CPR certification or be able to successfully pass the CPR course.  Competency Testing is assessed on an annual basis.

Requires computer literacy.  Training can be provided on needed Laboratory Software functions.
