PURPOSE The Clinical Informatics Specialist II utilizes the knowledge and skills of clinical practice to lead the optimal design, development, evaluation, and support of clinical technology solutions utilized by care providers, ensuring that systems are consistent with professional standards of practice. Integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge into clinical practice improvements.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Establishes the need for new systems or updates to existing systems to support and enhance clinical practice and develops specifications that will support the design and implementation across the organization.
2. Assesses, analyzes, and translates clinical needs and requirements into development of appropriate clinical systems.
3. Assesses the impact and overall functioning of applications on patient care and clinical staff and works to mitigate the impact of work flow changes as a result of technology implementation.
4. Conducts workflow analysis and recommends change management strategies to improve adoption of technology.
5. Collaborates with clinical staff to optimize systems through ongoing enhancements, partnership with training teams to identify and resolve educational gaps, provision of information related to quality outcomes, and providing ongoing support to achieve organizational goals.
6. Executes assessments of current clinical technology systems and develops a strategy for upgrade and/or replacement to ensure availability of appropriate tools to support practice.
7. Collaborates with clinicians, leaders, and other departments to clarify needs, prioritize requests, recommend technology design, and support change to clinical systems.
8. Identifies and implements the designs, enhancements and modifications that improve user acceptance and achieve the business needs of the organization.
9. Facilitates the integration of data, information, and clinical knowledge to support patient care decision making.
10. Coordinates the introduction and implementation of information systems with key stakeholders and identifies support systems which will integrate systems into practice.

FORMAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Knowledge

Required for completely satisfactory performance in this job are knowledge of current clinical practices and computing systems, interfaces, and current standard software. Familiarity with various operating systems used by Hospital and data processing techniques and practices. A working knowledge of a variety of hardware and software environments and of the healthcare industry is also required. Knowledge of Epic healthcare applications.

Skills

Required for completely satisfactory performance in this job are project management and planning, leadership skills, excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, and organizational skills, ability to analyze the functionality of systems and their fit with specifications, and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Key skills are observation, results oriented, and communication.

Formal Education

and Experience

The formal education and/or experience required for completely satisfactory performance in this job are as follows

* Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business administration, healthcare administration, nursing or other related field.
* Five (5) years of experience in hospital information systems selection, implementation and support, or specific clinical experience in nursing, respiratory care, occupational/physical therapy, or pharmacy
* Three (3) years of information systems related experience
* One of the following licenses is required
* Registered Nurse (RN) licensure with the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
* Nurse Practitioner (NP, PNP, NNP, FNP) licensure with the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
* Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) licensure with the Texas Department of State Health Services
* Occupational Therapy (OT) or Physical Therapy (PT) licensure with the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners
* Registered Pharmacist (RPH) licensure with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy

An equivalent combination of education, licensure, and experience may be substituted for the required amounts.

The following is preferred

* EPIC certification.
* Certification in Informatics.
