This positions primary location is at the LBJ General Hospital - MD Anderson Medical Oncology Clinic in Northeast Houston.

Key Functions
Assumes responsibility for the effective conduct of multiple research protocols in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and external collaborators. Assesses patients for protocol eligibility through personal interviews and/or medical record review in outpatient settings. Coordinates, evaluates and follows the patients participation in clinical trials, including obtaining informed consent and registration. Provides documentation in the patients medical record or recruitment log per protocol and institutional requirements. Identifies and develops methods of patient recruitment.

Assists in collection and evaluation of data. Evaluates response to treatment, treatment toxicities and adverse drug reactions and reports appropriately to the principal investigator, the Institutional Review Board and external collaborators.

Participates in protocol-specific clinical tasks as needed. Identifies and provides patient and family educational needs regarding treatment management, evaluation and follow-up in clinical trials through talking with patients person-to-person or by telephone and/or through written educational material. Orders protocol-related tests, procedures and consults and obtains pathology slides and blocks as needed.

Provides professional and ancillary staff education concerning research protocols by presenting in-services and/or by providing clearly understood written information documents to clinic staff as each new protocol is introduced. Provides accurate information as requested to the multidisciplinary team, consumers and professional public organizations. Keeps current concerning oncology and data management issues through reading and/or attending meetings/in-services. Keeps current concerning LBJ infrastructure and operations by attending meetings (i.e. disease specific committee meetings) specifically geared toward patient care at LBJ.

Documents and organizes protocol-related items consistent with protocol guidelines, institutional and departmental policies, GCP (Good Clinical Practice) and Federal Regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of research process, Code Federal Regulations and ICH guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP).

Acts as a liaison between MD Anderson Department of General Oncology and the Harris Health System employees involved with the oncology service at LBJ General Hospital.

Assists with monitor visits, protocol audits, and the regulatory responsibilities of the protocol conducted by the Department of General Oncology staff through the oncology service at LBJ General Hospital.

Conducts and coordinates various administrative duties.

Serves as a resource to other MD Anderson departments in regards to the functional processes at LBJ General Hospital.

Retrieves and visually reads patients medical record; manually operates a personal computer.

Conducts personal interviews with patients during visits or communicating via telephone; contacts local physicians by telephone or letter as necessary for protocol follow-up.

Provides investigational medications, following acceptable nursing procedures/guidelines; arranges for the collection and proper identification of special lab specimens as required by protocol.

Assists with the quality assessment of all data management responsibilities; assists with data entry into computerized data management system as necessary; provides protocol summary reports as requested.

Provides cross-coverage for other research nurses.
