Description

Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of diagnostic medical sonograms (such as abdominal and OB/Gynecology ultrasound examinations) utilizing complex ultrasound.

Essential functions:

• Is responsive to the needs of others by maintaining a professional behavior toward members & coworkers & creating a positive image for the department.
• Models & reinforces ethical behavior in self & others in accordance to the Principles of Responsibility; adheres to organizational policies & guidelines; supports compliance initiatives.
• Identifies the impact of cultural diversity & lifestyle choices on patient condition & makes accommodations for such differences.
• Demonstrates competency & understands the overall operational functions of the department to include all reception duties & cashier functions.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional & chronological maturation process in delivery of services to patients of the age group served (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric).
• Able to assess data reflective of the patient's status & interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs & to provide the care needed in accordance w/ department policy.
• Adjusts technical factors relative to the requirements of the study & the physical maturation of the patient.
• Modifies patient positioning techniques relative to the patient's physical & cognitive abilities.
• Always takes special care in handling, positioning and/or restraining infants & geriatric patients to avoid injury or excessive radiation exposure
• Demonstrates competence & understands the overall operational function of the department to include scheduling of patient appointments by telephone, mail, or in person utilizing RIS.
• Demonstrates competence in the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment, real time & mobile, to obtain quality diagnostic images.
• Consistently selects correct technical factors relative to the requirements of the study & the patient's age & body habitus.
• Consistently selects equipment settings & appropriate transducers in accordance w/ department protocols & patient body habitus.
• Consistently processes hard copy images properly, utilizing automated equipment.
• Properly & consistently follows specific infection control techniques relative to ultrasound imaging (e.g., cold sterilization of probes, use of condoms on endocavity probes, etc.).
• Routinely manipulates transducer appropriately to obtain the desired images.
• Consults w/ the radiologist or other clinician for purposes of clarifying orders.
• Selects alternate or additional views appropriately relative to the patient's condition.
• Does not attempt to perform an exam in any case in which it cannot be performed safely and/or properly.
• Consistently demonstrates the ability to differentiate between normal & abnormal anatomy.
• Documents clinical activities in a timely, comprehensive & accurate manner.
• Completes & initials the standard consultation form & the radiology processing record accurately & immediately following each procedure.
• Routinely documents patient history relative to previous surgery, childbirth & other conditions which could affect the ultrasonic image of internal organs.
• Maintains equipment, supplies & work area in accordance w/ department guidelines.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• Two (2) years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in a major medical center, preferred.

• Experience with Acuson Sequoia, Philips iu-22 and Clickview ultrasound reporting package, preferred.

• Current American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification to include registries of physics, abdomen, and Obstetrics/Gynecology

• Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited ultrasound program OR a graduate from a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with current ARDMS certification and one (1) year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in a major medical center.

• BLS

• Competency in components of sonography as listed: routine abdomen, abdomen Doppler, small parts, thyroid, and obstetrics/gynecology.

Notes:

• This position may require travel for assignment within the San Diego Service Area.

• Work schedule may be adjusted to accommodate department needs.

• This position includes a rotational assignment on the Ultrasound stand-by list.

• Currently the Days and hours are varied.

• Times are between 7am and 8:30am for days, evenings are between 2:30pm and 5:30pm., weekends are between 7am and 8:30am; evenings are between 4:00pm and 5:30pm.
