About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

Note: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed in that specialty grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the candidate.

The VA Medical Center Memphis is seeking four (4) full time Physician Assistants to join the Emergency Department. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief of the Emergency Department. The incumbent will work closely with the Emergency Department Service providers and rotating specialty residents.

Clinical activities may include, but are not limited to:

* Health Care Management of assigned Veteran patients with acute and chronic illnesses;
* Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies;
* Consultation and referrals;
* Patient follow-up, as appropriate;
* Administrative activities, including performance improvement activities, committee and task forces assignments and administrative, research and non-clinical tasks as assigned.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

All individuals applying for this position must meet the Physician Assistant Qualification Standards as described in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G8.

Citizenship:US citizenship is required. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Education: The candidate must meet one of the following:

(1) A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or

(2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA with a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or health-related science; or

(3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

Certification: Candidate must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA), and maintain such certification.

Physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
