Reporting to the Chief of Medical Physics Computer Service, the Manager of Medical Physics Systems integrates radiation therapy and general computer hardware and software systems into the medical physics and radiation oncology departmental network.

The Manager: Collaborates with medical physicists, equipment service engineers and hospital IT staff to plan the design of appropriate network architectures and data storage, archive and retrieval models. Coordinates and supervises a group that provides IT-related support to Medical Physics and Radiation Oncology users. Oversees the administration and management of radiation therapy and general computer systems.

Highlighted responsibilities:

1. Project planning: In collaboration with medical physics, radiation oncology, IT departments and equipment vendor, plans the installation and maintenance/upgrade of radiation therapy and general departmental computer systems within the IT infrastructure. Radiation therapy systems include CT simulators, treatment planning, treatment management, radiotherapy PACS, and treatment delivery systems. Planning includes assessment of user/departmental needs, specification of network jack locations, IP address needs, firewall configuration, security access and virus protection. Identifies exceptions to IT policies that are required by the vendor systems. Acts as point person for all IT-related assessments, including consultant role in RT equipment selection.
2. Hardware & software installation: Coordinates installation, configuration and integration into departmental network with equipment vendor, medical physicist, onsite engineering staff, and hospital IT staff. Ensures interoperability with existing clinical systems both in-house and vendor supplied.
3. Supervision and support: Coordinates and supervises a group that responds to IT-related problems at CT simulation, treatment planning, treatment imaging and delivery, and general computer activities. IT-related problems include network connectivity, domain/rights, DICOM configuration and server issues.
4. System administration and management: Oversees the administration and management of radiation therapy (CT simulation, planning, radiotherapy PACS) and general computer systems and applications. Provides technical support, manages security issues, user permissions, installation and upgrades of software. Installs and configures DICOM communication between radiation therapy systems. Coordinates testing of new and upgraded hardware, software and databases.
5. Maintenance: Monitors and tests archiving systems of CT simulation, treatment planning, and treatment management (CASPER) systems. Monitors databases, servers and disk storage and takes pre-emptive action as needed to avoid impending outages or performance deterioration.
6. Business continuity: Develops business continuity plans in the event of IT-related system failures, such as network outages, computer equipment failures, and database outages.
7. Documentation and reporting: Writes computer system operation, management protocols and procedures. Writes technical documentation and user manuals for applications.

Candidates considered will possess a BA or BS degree in Computer Science or related engineering field AND seven-to-ten years hands-on experience in a radiation oncology, computing, networking and data communications environment.

Other qualifications include:

* Extensive experience with computer systems administration and operations management.
* Support experience with LANs in conjunction with radiotherapy and end user applications.
* Extensive exposure to integrated multi-vendor environments.
* Good verbal, writing and interpersonal skills essential.
* Supervisory/managerial experience highly desirable.
* Strong working knowledge of and experience with radiation oncology systems and process flow.
* Strong experience with network protocols, data communications, relational databases, batch/script programming, and data management.
