About Calpine

An American power firm, Calpine Corporation provides 20 states and Canada with 28,000 megawatts of electricity. Through acquisition and construction, company operates 93 power plants that generates, sells, and delivers energy to consumers. Calpine is the largest geothermal power producer in North America, accounting for two fifths of the nation's geothermal energy.

Products & Services

Calpine seeks to supply clean and efficient energy and thus utilizes energy-efficient technologies. The company achieves clean electricity in two ways: combined-cycle natural gas-fired and geothermal power generation. The first technology comes from generating facilities and centers that are environmentally friendly and that create a process that is efficient. The latter power’s source comes from 15 geothermal power plants, located in Northern California. These plants utilize earth’s natural qualities—steam from geysers—to create electricity. Moreover, Calpine is engaged in augmenting its fleet of power plants, specializing in developing and leasing its power pants. The company wholesales all types of energy, from steam to renewable energy, and also offers to its industrial customers thermal energy.

History

The founders of Calpine left a construction company to seek opportunities in energy production. With an initial capital of $1 million, Calpine was born in 1984. It first began power production in 1988 and then went public in 1996 with the largest IPO in history for that of an independent energy company. From its public offering to 2000, the company aggressively acquired power plants to add to its portfolio. By 2001, it had established itself as among the world’s top ten electricity producers. However, in 2005 the company faced bankruptcy when the Lehman Brothers began shorting Calpine. The company emerged from its financial crisis in 2008. It began acquiring power plants again in 2012 with the purchase of Bosque Power Company.

Job Opportunities

Calpine is traded on the NYSE under CPN. It offers students and graduates internships and rotational analyst programs. Seasoned professionals can find jobs in engineering, safety, and more.
