Both James Sinegal and Jeffrey H. Brotman had experience in the retail industry, the former as wholesale distribution worker and the second an attorney from a retailing family. Together the two founded Costco and in 1983 opened the first Costco warehouse opened in Washington. The company beat Wal-Mart to the punch and merged with Price Club, effectively allowing the company to enter the international market. Although having operated as PriceCostco post-merger, the company rebranded as Costco Wholesale in 1997. Today Costco is a Fortune 500 company that competes with Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club as the top warehouse retailer.
