History

Founder Barney Kroger took a risk and put his life savings into opening a grocery store in 1883. The company grew into a grocery chain and by the 1950s had expanded into many more states including Texas and Florida. Kroger merged with Fred Meyer, also a grocery company, in 1997 and acquired stores from Super Fresh, both allowing the company to eliminate competition. The company continued to acquire companies and stores in the 2000s. Now after hundreds of acquisitions, Kroger stocks 50,000 units of merchandise in its stores and delivers a portfolio of 12,000 private-label products.
